Automatic sprinkler systems are used more than any other fixed fire protection system and over 40 million sprinklers are fitted world-wide each year.

Legislation states that multi-storey buildings over 30 meters high must be fitted with sprinklers to meet British Standards. Similarly an unpartitioned area in a shop in commercial premises over 2000 square metres requires sprinkler protection. There are corresponding regulations applying to buildings for industrial or storage use.
